Video: What does the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act prohibit?

The FDCPA prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you. For example, a debt collector cannot contact you if you have informed them in writing to stop contacting you. They cannot use threats of violence or harm or obscene language. They cannot lie when attempting to collect a debt from you. An example of this would be to misrepresent the amount you owe or falsely claim you have committed a crime.
